Athens Recovery is the outpatient program of Serenity Grove. Our partial hospitalization program serves adults across Athens and Northeast Georgia who need substantial daily structure but do not require twenty-four-hour care.
What Is a Partial Hospitalization Program?
A partial hospitalization program — PHP, sometimes called day treatment — is the most intensive level of outpatient addiction care. In the ASAM Criteria, the standard used across the addiction treatment field to match people to the right intensity of care, PHP is Level 2.5.
It sits directly above intensive outpatient treatment and directly below residential care. The distinguishing feature is the amount of structured clinical time: our PHP runs six hours a day, Monday through Friday — roughly double an intensive outpatient day.
Signs a Partial Hospitalization Program Is Right for You
PHP tends to be the right fit when:
- You have completed detox or residential treatment and are not yet ready to step down to a few hours a week
- You need daily clinical contact and daily structure to hold recovery steady
- You are managing a substance use disorder alongside a mental health condition
- Your home environment is stable and supportive enough to return to each night
- You are able to commit to a full-day schedule

What a Day in Our PHP Looks Like
Our partial hospitalization program runs six hours a day, Monday through Friday. Programming includes group therapy, individual therapy, psychoeducation, and family therapy, with treatment for co-occurring mental health conditions built into the same program rather than handled separately.
The length of the day is the point. Six hours allows for a full sequence of clinical work — group, individual time, skills practice, family involvement — rather than a single session squeezed around other obligations.
What We Treat
Our PHP treats substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health conditions together. Conditions such as depression, anxiety, and PTSD frequently accompany substance use, and treating one while deferring the other leaves the untreated condition working against recovery.

If you’re working through opioid use disorder, our medical team can also evaluate you for medication-assisted treatment while you’re in the program.
How PHP Fits Into the Continuum
PHP is usually not where recovery starts and not where it ends.
Medical detox and residential treatment are available at Serenity Grove’s Newton Bridge Road campus in Athens — the same organization Athens Recovery belongs to. Clients commonly step down from that campus into our partial hospitalization program, then into our intensive outpatient program at three hours per session, and then into standard outpatient care.
If your clinical needs change in either direction while you are with us, we adjust. Moving up a level is not a failure of the work already done.
Family Involvement
Our program includes family therapy and education sessions. Addiction reaches the people closest to it, and recovery holds better when those people understand what is happening and how to support it.
