drug and alcohol detox centerOne of the biggest roadblocks to recovery is the detox and the ensuing withdrawal symptoms. For many of those struggling with addiction, painful or uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms can cause a return to use. Going through detox without the help of a professional team can be a recipe for relapse. However, at Athens Recovery, we offer an outpatient drug and alcohol detox center that provides medical and emotional support for this challenging time.

Do You Need a Drug and Alcohol Detox Center?

Before beginning an addiction treatment program, you’ll go through detox. When you stop drinking or using drugs, you might begin to suffer from withdrawal symptoms. These can include:

  • Headaches
  • Nausea
  • Strong cravings
  • Insomnia
  • Anxiety
  • Muscle aches
  • Fevers
  • Chills

Trying to detox on your own can cause you to turn to drugs or alcohol for relief from these symptoms. When detox is needed, you might find it preferable to choose an outpatient drug rehab where the services available include ambulatory detox treatment options. Athens Recovery can provide high-quality ambulatory medical detox, also known as outpatient detox or outpatient withdrawal management.

Outpatient Alcohol Detox

Alcohol addiction detox can result in dangerous, even life-threatening complications such as delirium tremens and seizures. Detox from alcohol addiction should always be medically managed, but can still often be accomplished in an outpatient setting.

Outpatient Benzodiazepine Detox

Much like alcohol detox, benzodiazepine detox can be dangerous. Long-term or excessive use of drugs like Xanax, Valium, or others in the benzo drug family can leave individuals prone to severe withdrawal symptoms, including life-threatening seizures. Ambulatory detox may be an option, although the tapering process may continue for a significant time even after the client is stabilized, based on the severity of the addiction and other factors.

Outpatient Opioid Detox

Athens Recovery can offer ambulatory detox for opiate or opioid addiction clients who qualify. For opioid use disorders (OUD), our physicians will counsel clients on the risks and benefits of two recovery tracks to choose from: an abstinence track and medication-assisted treatment (MAT) track.

Outpatient Stimulant Detox

Stimulant addiction includes the abuse of drugs such as methamphetamine, cocaine, and even prescription amphetamines and stimulants, such as ADHD drugs like Adderall, Vyvanse, Concerta, and Ritalin. During detox from stimulants, our empathetic team will prescribe various medications when indicated to treat the symptoms of stimulant withdrawal.

Our Approach to Drug and Alcohol Detox

Our drug and alcohol detox center offers a medically managed program to help clients safely go through withdrawal. If withdrawal symptoms are severe, we can refer clients to our partner center, Serenity Grove, for inpatient treatment.

First, our physician-led team conducts an assessment. A comprehensive history is taken with special attention to the drug of choice, amount and frequency of use, duration of use, last use, and the amount of last use. Additionally, we take into consideration any co-occurring medical and mental health conditions and any current prescription medication regimen. From there, we create individualized treatment plans.

Each day, clients will present for an ambulatory detox assessment. During this time, their overall condition, the severity of any withdrawals, and the response to the medications will be established. When the client is stable enough, we offer therapy sessions. Addiction counseling may occur in both group therapy sessions and one-on-one individual counseling.
